Custom Orders

I’ve completed many custom orders and am always excited to work with clients to create something special. Here are a couple examples:

Large decor pillow: my own photo digitally printed onto pre-loved sateen and combined with black walnut dyed cotton.

Updated antique quilt: I pieced new and pre-loved cotton onto damaged areas of a nine-patch quilt and then created a backing from pre-loved sateen. So soft and colourful!.

Materials and Process

Pre-loved Fabric: Pre-loved fabrics selected are natural fibers: cotton, linen, silk and wool. All fabric is laundered before being simmered in vegetable dye pots, cut and sewn into new patterns.

Non-Toxic Dye Process: The vegetable dyes, such as black walnut hulls and indigo, are chosen for their light fastness and ability to bond with the fabric either on their own or with the help of alum, a salt used in pickles.

Shibori: This is a Japanese resist-dye/tie-dye technique. I usually use a pattern that looks like willow branches. It’s faster to tie than other patterns and gives the surface design a woodsy feel.

Printing: Some fabric is printed with non-toxic, water-based silk screen ink, using antique wooden, type and other relief printing techniques.

Buckwheat: Buckwheat pillows are filled with new, clean buckwheat hulls grown in Québec. Buckwheat filling is considered hypo-allergenic because is does not contain irritating dust, does not attract dust mites, and few people have allergies to it. The hulls form a cradle for your head, neck and shoulders that keeps you from tossing and turning, plus air flow keeps you at a comfortable temperature no matter the season. And when the buckwheat becomes flat (in 3 – 5 years) you can unzip the pillow, pour the hulls in your compost bins and refill your pillow with new hulls.

Eco-Fill: Throw pillows are stuffed with all new polyester fill made from recycled, inert #1 P.E.T. plastic. This fill is considered hypo-allergenic because it does not attract dust mites.
