Eco-Practices
Fabric: Pre-loved fabric is given a second life, thus removing it from the waste stream for the time being.
A Home-Based Business: I work from home and conduct much of my business online and by phone. The location of our home office is a quick walk, bike or bus trip to most meetings. On days I use our one, fuel sipping car, many errands are planned around an efficient route.
Conserving Water: Since dyeing is a water intensive process dye baths and rinse water are re-used. When it can no longer be used for the dye process it goes in the garden. For this reason, dyeing usually takes place in the autumn. Fabric is line dried.
Eco-Renovations to Home Office & Studio: The middle aged house we call home, office & studio is recycled rather than building new. The house was chosen so that office, studio and print shop are under one roof. We renovated for water and energy conservation, and for healthy indoor air quality. Some of the eco-friendly choices were low-flow toilets, Energy Star furnace & washing machine, insulating to R10 in the walls and R40 in the attic, replacing old carpets with durable bamboo flooring, and painting the walls with Benjamin Moore low-VOC Aura paints. Natural light is used where possible. Window blinds help maximize heat retention in the winter and keep the house cool in summer. And vinegar and baking soda are the main cleaning agents.
Packaging and Shipping: Minimal packaging is used, and plastic wrappers that the polyester fill comes in to protect your new pillows and boxes for shipping are re-used.
Reducing Waste and Recycling: Paper is reused where possible and recycled when both sides are full. Much of the administrative work is done without printing. Office supplies are from recycled sources and goodlines is currently using tree-free paper for invoices, business cards are printed on 100% recycled paper using a non-toxic printing process, and refillable ink cartridges are used for in-office printing.
Travel: When traveling out of town, we take the train for a safer trip while getting work done, or use a fuel conserving car and double- or triple-up on meetings and errands.
